Our well-being doesn’t have to take a backseat due to the weather; with the right precautions and adjustments, exercising in the heat can be both manageable and rewarding. First things first: Understand the risks. Why is it not okay to exercise in the heat and how can it negatively impact our health?

When it gets very hot, exercising can lead to serious problems like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat exhaustion happens when your body gets too hot and can’t cool down properly. Always listen to your body. If you start feeling too hot, take a break, move to a cooler place, and drink water. It’s better to be safe and take care of yourself.

What can you do to prepare yourself to exercise in the heat, so that the heat does not negatively impact your health?

Drinking water is very important when it’s hot. Before you start exercising, drink a few glasses of water to make sure you’re not thirsty. Keep drinking water while you exercise and after you finish. This helps your body stay cool and work properly. If you wait until you’re thirsty to drink, you might already be getting dehydrated. What you wear can make a big difference in how you feel in the heat. 

Choose clothes that are light in color, loose, and made of materials that let your skin breathe. These kinds of clothes help keep your body cool. A hat can also protect your head from the sun, and sunglasses can protect your eyes, although neither might be a practical option while working out.  

Timing is important too! Try to exercise in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. The sun is not as strong during these times, so it’s safer. Always put on sunscreen before you go out, even if it’s cloudy. The sun’s rays can still reach you through the clouds and cause sunburn, which makes dealing with the heat even harder.

On very hot days, think about changing your workout. Instead of running or doing hard exercises outside, maybe go swimming or try a water aerobics class. These activities keep you cool while you’re moving. You can also do yoga or stretching exercises inside where it’s cooler. When it’s very hot, it’s smart to make your workout a bit easier.
