Essential oils have taken the skincare world by storm, encouraging people to take a more natural view of skincare using age old traditional methods. Diving into the world of essential oils can feel heady and confusing because of the sheer amount of oils that are out there. Experiment to see what essential oil works for your individual skin makeup, but for now here’s a handy guide of a few amazing essential oils to start with.
Lavender is extracted from the many kinds of the purple herb. It is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic which makes it particularly potent against acne, killing bacteria. It soothes the skin, relieving itching and redness, making it a good fit for those whose skin is exposed to pollutants. Dilute some lavender oil in a carrier oil of your choice – coconut, olive oil, argan oil for example – and dab it on your skin after you wash your face.
Extracted from the ylang ylang flowers of the Indonesian Cananga tree, this oil reduces skin irritation by soothing the infection. Ylang ylang regulates sebum that’s on the skin, which is good for oily, combination skin or dry skin. Dilute it in a carrier oil and apply it to your face as a toner, or on bites, irritation, inflamed skin or peeling skin.
Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the Tea Tree native to Australia. This oil is very effective, reducing acne as well as acne scars. Dilute it, however, and add just a drop or two as it can dry out your skin if overused. In moderation, the oil works wonders.
Neroli oil is extracted from orange blossoms, specifically the bitter orange. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. It moisturises skin and balances the oil on your face. Neroli oil can be applied directly on your face or added to any creams you might have. This oil can also help with acne scars.
